Individual racism, by itself is horrible, horrific, horrendous, but we won't get rid of it till we purge this country of its structural racism which continues to keep nooses and knees on the necks of Blacks - housing, education, health, employment, political, police, prison, courts, the entire justice system...
That POS didn't choke the life out of George Floyd only because he, the POS, was racist. He did it because he knew the system would back him. It does it all the time. Research! We are saying no more. And I don't care how uncomfortable it makes others feel. This is not about George Floyd, it's about all of the George Floyds gone before for 400 plus years. This is about all the others to come. It's about every Black person who is victim to these systems. George Floyd is collectively any and every Black person. George Floyd is me.
What this means for all of you who want to be allies, it means you have to be bold. Get out from behind your privilege. Educate yourselves. Have those difficult conversations. Be uncomfortable. Understand why Black lives matter. Say it! Work to destroy, reform, rebuild these systems. We, as Blacks, are no longer waiting for you. Jump on the train or stay in your comfort zone and continue to be part of the problem.
In the words of Martin Luther King, "In the end we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."
Lots of silence around me....
